Girls’ Hockey – Christmas Round-up

First Year.
First year girls have had a very encouraging first term. After a sucessful summer camp in August, over twenty five girls have taken up hockey as an extra-curricular activity. Two teams have been formed, playing both friendly and competitive matches. The ‘A’ team gained experience of playing in the Leinster League and both teams are looking forward to competing in Northside Leagues in the new year. Congratulations to all the girls who have put in fantastic effort since September, and keep up the good work in 2010.

Minors
This year saw the minor girls enter into the highest division of the 2nd year Leinster League. As a team they have coped with the challenges offered by this leap in standard very well, as it is a higher division than they have previously competed in. They will also enter into the Northside league after Christmas, and hopefully have as sucessful a run as last year, when they reached the final and won the competition. They are a very talented team, with some players playing up for older school teams as well.

Juniors
The junior girls have had a very sucessful start to the season. They have come first in their group in their Leinster League with two wins, a draw and one loss and so will progress to the next stage of the league next year. With plenty of girls playing up for older teams, the juniors are showing lots of promise for the future. They will take part in the Northside league in the New Year.

Seniors
This year the Senior A team entered into the Premier Leinster League for the first time in years, while Senior Bs took part in the Senior 3 Leinster League. After a mixed start, senior ‘A’s reached the Christmas break placed 4th out of 8 in Group A with two games still to play, far exceeding expectations in the highest league. After a comfortable win against John Scottus, they move on to the second round of the Senior Cup. The Senior ‘B’s are through to a play-off to secure their place in the last sixteen. Both teams will enter Northside leagues in the New Year.

The Senior Girls were enetered into both the Cup and League competitions this year. They have been entered a competitive and dedicated squad for  this years U-18 competition and are confident of doing well.
Ms. Meenah has joined the coaching staff. With Mr. Clarke having to look after the U-16 boys,he can only make some coaching sessions and matches, but Ms. Meenah has been drilling the girls in technique and fitness.
Training takes place on Monday afternoon from 4-5pm. The Under 18 girls won their first match on the 11th of November. After a tough game they came out with 7 goals to 3, a very good start to the season. They continue to train hard and hope to do well in the new year.
The Senior boys had a difficult opening Cup match V’s St. Josephs CBS but led for much of the first half before St. Josephs eventually ran out winners. They have been training alongside the under 16 boys.
Training takes place on Mondays and Wednesadays.
The focus is on organisations, movement, skill but overall on fun

Basketball: Christmas Round Up of News 2009

December 29, 2009

This year there was a major change in basketball in mount temple with a new coach, Praha Bunaveswaren, came in and took over from Mr. Ryan took as he took more of a backseat role. Yet he is still very involved in the sport and sports in the school wheras Coach Praha is now coach to all the teams. He sets about to improve the skills of all of the girls and to grow basketball within the school.

The senior and cadette’s season is now over yet training continues to prepare both teams for next year. A young senior team found it difficult to compete this year but has better hope for a more prosperous season next year. The cadette team started well this year yet found it difficult with injuries of key players. Both teams are looking forward to improving their skills and putting them into play next season.

The 1st years and 2nd year teams have both been selected and are set to start their season after Christmas holidays. In preperation there is to be a Christmas camp for all players to get ready for the important matches. To help players improve there skills they have also been playing club basketball with the school club Corinthians in the under 13 and 14 leagues. Both teams are lying second in there leagues at the moment half way through the season.

There are many people who have helped out with basketball this year putting in a lot of time and effort and they need to be thanked for their efforts. To all the students who help out with coaching, Ms. Burke, Coach Praha and Mr. Ryan I want to thank for their contribution to basketball.

Boys’ Hockey: Christmas Round Up of News and Results

December 29, 2009

First Year Boys: Both “A” and “B” teams are progressing well in their first season of hockey. The “A” team remain unbeaten this term, in league “B” after five games (two wins, three draws) putting them in a good position for a league semi-final place with a league title prospect fully on the table. Hard work and determination over the remainder of the campaign could mean the school’s first league title in three years. The “B” team playing in the “C” league have to yet to record a win, but results and more importantly performances are improving every game. Congratulations to many of the first years who have participated at a very high standard, including Junior “A” league matches, a huge accomplishment. Minor Boys: The minor “A” team are showing incredible talent and determination in the “A” league this season. With three wins from five over Kings Hospital, St. Columbas and Newpark, the season looks to have exciting prospects. With only one remaining league game left, attention is turning to the Minor cup where both teams the boys have lost to our in the other side of the draw. It is still a tough ask, but if the standards stay as high as before, a place in the final of the minor cup is not out of the question. Minor “B” team started slowly but have turned very strong over recent games and our now four games unbeaten and are hoping for a league semi-final place at the end of the season. Junior Boys: The story of the Junior “A” team this season has been, letting the lead slip away. Three times have they went a goal, if not two ahead and have ended up losing the game, along with a seriously depleted squad losing heavily to St. Andrews. With better luck and a bit more intelligence in the final ten minutes, the Juniors could easily be sitting top of the league instead of bottom with no points. Much better training attendance, effort and commitment needed if the Juniors are to compete in the cup or their remaining league games. The Junior “B” team have had a disappointing season with four losses but one memorable 3-1 win over St. Andrews. Like the Junior “A” team; training, effort and commitment are needed if progression and better results are to be achieved. Senior Boys: Undoubtedly the highlight of the year has been the much talked about, All Irelands. Moving into the Senior “A” league has been a very tough step up and with training numbers slipping after the tournament, results don’t look set to improve, unless more people put in a bigger commitment and attend training on a more regular basis. Three league games remaining but the attention switching to the Senior Plate, where they have drawn Kings Hospital in the first round. An improvement in training and effort could see a good run in this cup and an appearance in the final would put them through to the Senior cup. Good luck to them. Good luck to all teams towards the end of the season, in their remaining league games and possible cup runs.
